Love in the City: Part 1 – The Interview [Romance Stories]

Chapter 1: From Cornfields to Concrete

Emma Carter stepped out of the cab and looked up. New York City—loud, massive, and unforgiving. It was nothing like her sleepy hometown of Willow Creek, Nebraska, where the loudest noise was usually a tractor backfiring. But this was where dreams came true—or crashed and burned.

She adjusted her blazer, ignoring the butterflies in her stomach. Her journalism degree was crisp and new, her resume thinner than she liked—but she had an interview at Saxon Media Group, one of the biggest media conglomerates on the East Coast.

She needed this.

What she didn’t expect was him.

Chapter 2: Enter the Billionaire

“Miss Carter?” the assistant called. “Mr. Saxon will see you now.”

Emma followed her into the sleek, glass-walled office. And there he stood. Liam Saxon. The infamous billionaire CEO. Rumored to be ruthless, brilliant, and emotionally unavailable.

He was taller than she imagined. Sharper jawline. Colder eyes.

His gaze met hers, unreadable. “You’re from Nebraska?”

Emma straightened. “Yes, sir.”

He smirked. “Why do I get the feeling you’ve never been in a boardroom but could probably gut a fish with your eyes closed?”

She flushed. “I can. But I’d rather write stories that change the world.”

A pause. Then… a smile tugged at his lips.

“You’re hired.”

Chapter 3: Coffee & Clashes

Working for Liam Saxon was like skydiving blindfolded—thrilling, terrifying, and probably illegal. He challenged her. Mocked her. Ignored advice. But he also noticed everything. The way her lip curled when she was frustrated. The way her eyes sparkled when she pitched an idea.

One evening, after a grueling pitch meeting, he approached her in the hallway.

“You’re not like the others.”

Emma looked up. “What others?”

“The ones who smile while stabbing me in the back.”

She blinked. “I don’t carry a knife.”

He stepped closer, voice low. “That’s what scares me.”

Chapter 4: Stormy Nights & Stolen Glances

One stormy night, a blackout hit their Midtown building. Emma was alone in the office—until Liam showed up.

“You’re still here?” he asked.

“Deadlines don’t care about power outages,” she quipped.

The elevator stopped working. The WiFi crashed. For the first time, it was just the two of them—with no distractions.

They talked. About life. His childhood. Her dreams.

And then, unexpectedly, he brushed a lock of hair from her face. Her breath hitched. His lips hovered close. She should’ve pulled away.

She didn’t.

Chapter 5: Lines Crossed

The kiss was electric. Reckless. Forbidden.

They both knew the rules. No office romance. No blurring of lines.

But that kiss turned into more.

Secret dinners. Late-night texts. Hidden touches in glass elevators. She was falling for him—and against all odds, he was falling for her too.

But then came the file. A hidden folder on a company server she wasn’t supposed to see.

A scandal. A name.
A woman from Liam’s past.
And a lie he never told.
